Not only did it rain, it poured! My streak of bad luck continued last Friday as we left Lyon with bright blue skies to arrive in Lisbon in absolute pouring rain. It was absolutely tipping it down and anything remotely tourist related was impossible without getting drenched.
We found a small café on the promenade at Estoril and stayed there for ages, taking our time to eat and drink in the hope that the rain would go away. What a fantastic view we had!
Thankfully it brightened up on Saturday and we were able to visit Lisbon properly although we had just one day. I was able to take lots of photos although not with my own camera as my battery was dead! Arggh!
The weather is really strange at the moment as when we arrived back in Lyon on Sunday it was snowing! Again! We are in March! It never snows in Lyon, not normally anyway. It also snowed in the South of France and there were horrendous queues on the motorway. My cousin in law took 11 hours to drive from Lyon to Montpellier… so I was lucky to be in Lisbon in the rain after all!
If you read French just take a look at this article . I just love the photo of the snowy road!

Yeah, I’m pretty over the weather. You poor thing. Lisbon was not meant to be seen in the rain. The same thing happened to me in Seville – freezing rain the whole time! Let’s all put our collective energy into praying for spring to come! This bizarre winter has got to end!
I went to Lisbon last november… it is such a nice city.. I love it…
I lived there ten years ago as a french teacher and i really had a great time..
My flat was …at Estoril…
Thank you for remembering me good times.
I am sooooo sorry about the rain!!
I would comment longer, but I have just looked at the time and realized I have to leave the house in three minutes to go by Métro to meet Paul for a movie! Yikes! Gotta go, but I will be back.
Take care.
Karin
Hi Sion! I have been praying for the sun since last week, now it has snowed… what went wrong?
Seville in the freezing rain must have been about as good as Lisbon in the wind and rain! You wouldn’t expect it to be that cold so far South, especially Seville would you?
I would love to go to Seville, it is on my list of places to visit but there are no flights from Lyon which is a shame. I did drive through it a few years ago and it is my Dad’s fave city so I will get there one day…
Touring in Brittany: Wow! Lucky you! I fell in love with Estoril (or at least what I saw of it in the rain!). Lisbon seems such a great city, you must have loved it there! It is so cosmopolite and with such diverse scenery its truly wonderful. If you don’t mind can I contact you for some tips for places to visit etc. next time I go back there? True experience is always better than guide books! et maybe I can write to you in French hein?
Karin: Time flies! Hope you made it to the movie in time and that it was good
Okay — I came back.
One more comment. I am glad you got one sunny Saturday and re: France — This. Weather. Must. Stop!
It is making me crazy. Here in Paris the wind has been bitter cold and it feels like January still. I am feeling quite done with it. *sigh*
I made the movie on time, but unfortunately it was one of the more ridiculous ones I have seen in a while: “Daybreakers” with Ethan Hawke, Sam O’Neill and Willem Dafoe. It was one of the worst vampire movies I think I have ever seen! One of the worst movies, unfortunately! Don’t bother with it, anyone who reads this!
Hope you are doing well, Piglet!
Hi, thanks for coming back
Hope you’re having a good weekend and hopefully the warm weather will be upon us soon. Paris is too much like the UK weather wise for me, I’m not sure if I’d be able to put up with it. I complain enough about Lyon and the fact that I didn’t go far enough South so I feel sorry for you Parisians (although you’re lucky with all the wonderful culture and shops!).
Daybreakers: haven’t heard of it but then not a great movie person as I generally fall asleep. I normally watch them on TV or on DVD so I can pick up where I left once I wake up. I will make a precious note not to bother with this one thoug
AH! The rain and snow!! I’ve never yearned for nice weather so much in my life. Glad to hear you had some sun in Lisbon. I was there the last weekend of October last year and had the most beautiful weather, I was in heaven
Thanks for stopping by my blog and yes, my weather widget is in farenheit for the Americans
Thank goodness for that! I was really cursing myself about not moving far enough South after seeing 32 degrees on your site!!
Has it warmed up now? My parent-in-laws live south of Montelimar and they rarely used to get snow but they’ve been getting it more and more recently – actually more than what we’ve had here in Lyon!
I’ve bookmarked your blog so will enjoy following your adventures
