Each May you have a number of public holidays, this year they’re:
Saturday May 1st: Fete du Travail
Saturday May 8th : Victory ‘45
Thursday May 13th: Ascension
Sunday May 23rd: Pentecote
Notice how the first two fall on a Saturday? That means two extra days of work this month, lost holidays is how I see them. I could have had 4 extra days if the holidays had fallen on a Tuesday or Thursday as I could have taken the day between the weekend and the holiday off . Unfortunately for me the French don’t have all their public holidays on a Monday like the Brits do. Worse even, if the public holiday falls at the weekend they don’t get the Monday off in lieu which seems a bit tight.
So this year I will be milking the dual cultural life that I live for all its worth : I will be celebrating May day on Monday 3rd May just like they’ll be doing in the UK and will then proceed in holidaying on Thursday 13th for L’Ascension and of course, I’ll ferai le pont on Friday 14th. That’s what all my fellow Frenchies will be doing so I might as well join in with that as well.
Happy May Day!
